CUSTOM DIY PRE-EXPOSED SCREEN PRINTING FRAMES

High quality screen prints call for high quality screens. But getting decent screens set up at home without the proper equipment and experience can be a living NIGHTMARE. If you're looking to screen print your own designs at home, but don't know where to start when it comes to screen making, we feel you... we've been there too! Fyahfly can supply you with custom pre-exposed DIY screens so you can get straight to printing.

THE HARD WAY

Way back when we first started out of our tiny little flat in Bristol, we learnt things the hard way. We used a cheap 1000w halogen light source and a modified glass-topped Ikea coffee table to expose our screens and had to develop and wash out the stencils in the bathroom! Needless to say this was not ideal and never usually went all that smoothly. There are SO many variables to nail down when it comes to getting perfect stencils - properly colour separated high quality artwork, emulsion type and thickness, mesh size, film acetate quality, wattage and distance of the light source from the image, exposure time... the list goes on. It's by no means easy and I for one am glad those days are over. Fast forward to now, and we've got our screen making process dialled in to tee (sorry).

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB

We've since invested in a proper washout booth, pressure washer and top of the line UV LED exposure unit, built a dark room and optimised the way we print films using our Epson inkjet film positive printer and dedicated RIP software. Not only that but now we're also armed with years worth of experience making screens . So much so that the things that used to keep us up at night are now the things we can do without thinking about. Now we've got the ability to set up perfect screens, we figured we'd share the love and offer this service out to YOU!

CHOOSING THE RIGHT MESH COUNT FOR YOUR CUSTOM DIY PRE-EXPOSED SCREENS

We generally use 3 different mesh counts for the majority of our work which cover pretty much all bases. Screen printing frames have a fine mesh stretched over them. It's this mesh that's coated with a photosensitive emulsion which is the foundation for your stencil.

Understanding Mesh Counts

The mesh count refers to the size of the opening in the mesh. For example, a 43T mesh count means there are 43 threads making up each centimetre of mesh. A 90T mesh has 90 threads per centimetre of mesh. The higher the mesh count, the smaller the opening in the mesh. Mesh counts are measured in threads per cm in the UK and threads per inch in the US (see mesh count conversion table below).

So which mesh is right for my art?

Higher mesh counts are capable of holding finer detail and deposit a thinner layer of ink as a result of the smaller openings in the mesh. Printing a fairly simple, bold design onto a t-shirt? A 43T or 62T mesh is probably a good choice. Printing artwork with lots of small text or details onto paper? A 90T mesh is the way to go! See the table below to help you decide which mesh count would work best for your artwork. Still not sure? That's okay, we can help you choose the perfect mesh for your artwork when you place your order.
US Mesh (Threads Per Inch) UK Mesh (Threads Per Cm) Application
110 43T T-Shirt and Fabric Printing - simple, bold images
156 62T T-Shirt, Fabric and Paper Printing - fairly detailed images
230 90T Super-fine Detailed Artwork - ideal for using waterbased inks on paper
